Fort Bend Performing Arts Series Presents Riders Radio Theatre On The Road Starring Riders In The Sky
Saddle up and get ready to ride through an evening of wacky western wit, heavenly harmonies, and high-yodeling adventure as Fort Bend Performing Arts Series presents Riders Radio Theatre…On The Road! on April 21, 2007 at 7:00 pm.
For over 15 years, “Riders Radio Theatre is on the air!” has rung out over National Public Radio airwaves, entertaining listeners from coast to coast. Loosely based on shows from the Golden Age of Radio, Riders Radio Theatre originated as a weekly show recorded in front of a live audience—starring “America’s Favorite Cowboys,” Riders In The Sky along with announcer Texas Bix Spender and sound effects wizard Professor Zeno Klinkler.
Riders In the Sky lasso audiences in with their cowboy charm, color and personality everywhere they go. By playing Western songs grounded in the American music traditions of such legendary cowboy singers as Gene Autry, Roy Rogers, and the Sons of the Pioneers, the Riders have themselves become the stuff of legend.
Years of requests for Riders Radio Theatre to go on tour went unanswered due to logistical restraints and personnel availability, but, as faithful listeners will recall, “things have a way of working out around Harmony Ranch.”
So now, for the first time ever, “Riders Radio Theatre is on the Road!”
Their music has been featured in Disney/Pixar’s Toy Story, Toy Story 2, and For the Birds, among many other animated programs. The Riders have also starred in their own Saturday morning television series and hosted “Tumbleweed Theater” for TNN. They have appeared in television advertisements for Levi’s and Taco Bell and as spokesmen for the National Park Service.
The Riders include guitarist and baritone vocalist Ranger Doug, who brings a humorous aspect to the show, upright “bunkhouse” bassist Too Slim, whose sharp wit is often called “comic genius,” Woody Paul, who is dubbed “King of the Cowboy Fiddlers” and is the lead tenor of the group, and accordionist Joey “The Cow Polka King,” who is also the group’s producer.
Yes, Ranger Doug, Too Slim, Woody Paul and Joey the Cow Polka King are back, righting the wrongs of their arch enemy, Slocum, and his henchman, Charlie, along with fan favorites Sidemeat (Riders’ faithful sidekick and cook), Miss Marm (Ranger Doug’s love interest who runs the Montessori Day Care and Prune Ranch), High Sheriff Drywall, and all the other denizens of Tumbleweed Valley!
Emceed by Texas Bix Bender and embellished by Professor Zeno Klinkler, the two-hour performance begins and ends with the Riders In The Sky performing the best in Western music, from “Woody’s Roundup” to “Tumblin’ Tumbleweeds”…but in between, the stage presentation of Riders Radio Theatre On The Road rides again! The two-act melodrama leaves fans on the edge of their seats at intermission, and has them cheering for more with dramatic conclusion in Act II.
Fort Bend Performing Arts Series is pleased to present Riders Radio Theatre On The Road on April 21, 2007 at 7:00 p.m. The performance is in the auditorium of Williams Trace Baptist Church located at 16755 Southwest Freeway, Sugar Land, Texas.
